Register to vote

In some states and circumstances, registrants may be able to complete the entire process online (particularly when you are using a state-issued photo ID from that state to register). Click here for a list of states that may allow complete online submission. However, in most states and circumstances, you will need to take some additional steps like printing and signing completed forms, submitting copies of your photo ID, etc. In addition, very few states will allow you to request an absentee ballot entirely online.

Because of this, we recommend that you stop by one of our In-Person Registration locations so we can assist you. However, if you prefer to use these tools to register yourself (or at least to start the process), we can still help you with printing, mailing, copies, etc. as needed. And the tools will give you instructions on how to complete the process on your own, if you wish.

Important Notes

You can use this tool to register yourself or update your registration address. In some cases, you may be able to submit this form online. However in many cases, you will need to print and mail the form, or take other additional steps to complete the registration. NU Votes can help you with those additional steps:

Printing and Mailing
If you can’t submit entirely online, this tool will most often provide you with a printable pdf. If you would like us to print and mail this pdf form for you, you can simply email the pdf to us at NUVotes@northwestern.edu. We will print it for you, remind you to drop by our office or an NU Votes voter registration station to sign it, and we will mail it for you.

Just mailing
If you prefer, you can print and sign the form yourself, and simply drop it at our office or at an NU Votes voter registration station.

Copies of your ID
In some cases, you may be asked to include a copy of your ID with your forms. We can copy your ID for you if you drop by our office or an NU Votes voter registration station.
